Abstract:

Typed transcripts of ten letters centering on the 1853 overland journey of the Pierce Butler company, with an account of Polk County, Oregon, in 1853-1854. The letters are by E.D. Butler, Isaac & Margrit Smith, Ira F.M. Butler, Peter Butler, Eliza A. Ground, William B. Ground, Edward Ground, and T.H. & E.H.B. Hutchinson. With supplementary memoirs by a member of the train, George Miller West, an employee of Ira F.M. Butler, (d. 1912), and a letter by his son, Henry H. West, 1944, pasted in.
